Revelation 1:17 “And when I saw Him…”

Revelation 1:17
17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:

-John the beloved; the disciple whom Jesus loved.  In scripture, John rests on Jesus’ breast (John 13:23), watches as Jesus is transfigured (Matthew 17:1-2), came to the Lord’s empty tomb and believed (John 20:8), saw Jesus several times after his resurrection (John 20:19-20), and watched Him ascend up to heaven (Acts 1:9).  But despite being a beloved disciple and spending all of that time with Jesus; when he finally sees the Lord in all His glory, he can only fall at His feet as though dead; afraid.  It turns out that nothing in John’s life could have prepared him for that meeting with Jesus.  Seeing Jesus as the humble Servant who died on a cross is the most important thing that any of us can ever do, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that that’s all there is to Him.  Only the tip of Jesus’ glory and majesty has been revealed and just as it was with John, nothing in this life will ever prepare us for what it will be like to truly see Him.
