9 The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the Lord; and what wisdom is in them?
-God’s people have gone so very far astray. As pointed out by Jeremiah, they continue deeper and deeper into sin without realizing the error of their ways. They call evil good and good evil, they trust false prophets with their lives while stoning those truly sent from God. How could it get this bad? Jeremiah gives us the answer in this very verse in the form of a statement and then a question. The statement: “They have rejected the Word of the Lord“- By shunning God’s word they have turned away any chance they had at having their darkness illuminated. The question: “What wisdom is in them?” – This is a question with an implied response, “no wisdom is in them”. Jeremiah is reminding them (and us) that men and women have no wisdom in themselves and so anytime we turn away from God’s wisdom, we are left with nothing. “There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” (Proverbs 14:12)
