Acts 1:8-9 – But ye shall receive power

Acts 1:8-9
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
-In the days following the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, He appeared to His disciples to offer a final round of comfort and instruction before ending His earthly ministry.  Among those encounters was this exchange preceding Jesus’ ascension to heaven.  Jesus gave His disciples a job for which they were sorely unqualified, to be His witnesses.  Couldn’t the angels have done it better?  Couldn’t God haven’t created a new being just for this specific purpose?  Certainly there were better options than the lowly, sinful human race.  But God is not interested in finding beings with merit, His specialty is bestowing merit where none exists.  The disciples had no merit, I have no merit, and you have no merit; but that all changes when the Blood of Jesus is applied.  We might have been worthless and hell bound before Christ; “but [we] were washed, but [we] were sanctified, but [we] were justified, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11): “and whom he justified, them he also glorified.” (Romans 8:30)  The angels will not be the witnesses of Christ, the Seraphim will not be the witnesses of Christ, you are charged with being the witness of Christ; “not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”  (John 1:13)
