Ezekiel 34:11-12 – The Good Shepherd

Ezekiel 34:11-12
11
For thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out.
12 As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.

-In John 10, Jesus paints for us a beautiful picture of Himself as the Good Shepherd which is framed perfectly with His declaration, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.” (John 10:10)  It is very comforting to know that we have a Shepherd to follow who will lead us home; but the idea of the Lord seeking out His wayward flock is not specific to the New Testament.  In Ezekiel 34, the Lord expresses His displeasure with the earthly under shepherds who have turned to ungodly ways and promises that He will personally take responsibility for finding and delivering us.  The Lord has been searching for us since before we even existed, He’s been calling to us since before we had ears to hear; if you haven’t responded to His voice, He calls for you still.  It is very unpleasant the thought of anyone going to Hell, but we can take comfort in the fact that no one goes to Hell without the Lord.  That is to say without the Lord calling to them, wooing them and striving to lead them away from destruction.
