Romans 10:17 – Faith By Hearing

Romans 10:17

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

-Roughly 0.4% of the population is deaf; that means 99.6% of the population can hear.  Furthermore, a great many of those who hear do so every day without the Word of God and yet we are told here in Romans 10:17 that hearing comes by the Word of God.  I suppose we could dismiss this as meaning that by God’s word, He gave us the ability to hear.  True indeed, but if “faith cometh by hearing“, where would that leave that 0.4% of us who cannot hear?  The only reasonable answer is that when the Bible speaks of hearing, it means something more than sound waves vibrating in our ears.  The Greek word here for “hearing” is “akouo” and carries with it the idea of getting a sense of the thing heard.  As Jesus was quick to warn us, “If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.”  The fact that Jesus makes such a statement to a group who have been listening to His every word assumes that they have ears and have heard, but the Lord goes beyond that.  It takes more than ears that lead to the brain; it takes ears that lead to the heart.  Anyone can receive words from the Bible, but to have ears to hear means that when you receive the words, you get a sense of the One speaking them.  Not a Prophet or a Preacher or a Missionary; but God Himself.
