Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
-As Paul lays out the various aspects of the Armor of God which can protect us from the powers of darkness, he makes the statement in verse 17; “above all, taking the shield of faith”. Why would the shield of faith be “above all” for us? Because faith is at the beginning and end of everything that we are in the Lord. “Without faith it is impossible to please God” (Hebrews 11:6) and so without faith it is impossible to war against darkness. The shield of faith can always protect us; not because we are faithful, but because “God is faithful.” (1 Corinthians 1:9)
