And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:
Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.
And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
-Being judgmental, sanctimonious, holier-than-thou, elitist, snooty, whatever you want to call it, it’s one of the most common human behaviors and even the nicest and most humble among us have been guilty of it at some point. All pride is born of ignorance for “if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.” (Galatians 6:3) That means pride will never be profitable, not to mention the fact that the Lord absolutely hates it (Proverbs 8:13). If we could get through the rest of our days without ever feeling this way, we would be much better off; but that can be easier said than done. If you ever feel this mindset coming on, remember that the people around you are made out of the same dirt that you are.
