8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
-Take a moment and reflect on all the good things that you have done in your life for those around you. Hopefully it’s a considerable list. But no matter how long your list may be, it doesn’t even begin to chip away at the great debt of sin which we all owe. The simple truth is that no matter how good or how plentiful your deeds may be, at best it can only benefit other people, while all sin is against God. What good could any of us ever do that would benefit God personally? Not only are we unable to pay for our sin debt, it turns out that we don’t even deal in the right currency. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8) Christ paid for our sins with His own blood; blood that can settle every debt and satisfy even the Father in Heaven.
