Romans 6:13-16 – Above All, Taking the Shield

Romans 6:13-16
13
Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

The Bible teaches that we are to continuously “grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18); ever stronger, ever wiser, ever closer to Christ’s high example should be our constant goal.  Yet, consider the final piece of defensive armor that we are told to take up here in Romans 6; the shield of faith that is needed to quench all of the fiery darts of the wicked.  All of them.  The shield is not a backup just for the attacks that we can’t stand, but rather it is an essential piece if we plan to stop any and all attacks.  Continue to grow and develop in the faith, but always remember that we are never so spiritual so as to no longer need God’s shield.  If we decide that we can make it in our own strength, Satan has just the right arrows picked out to take even the strongest Christians down.
