Matthew 4:5-6 – It Is Written

Psalm 91:11-12
11
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
12 They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

Matthew 4:5-6
5
Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

In Ephesians 6:17, the Bible is called the “Sword of the Spirit”, and it is the most important weapon we could hope to have as we fight against Satan and the powers of darkness.  Notice how in Matthew 4, Satan uses that very weapon to attack Jesus Christ Himself.  Jesus’ response shows divine wisdom and His victory in this encounter goes without saying, for He is the Word of God.  How would you or I do?  Satan has been studying the Bible a lot longer than any of us and he’s not afraid to use it to deceive us.  If Satan gave us a verse of scripture out of context, would we be able to see through it or would we be deceived?  Even if we can’t quote a particular Bible verse, do we have the discernment to take what we have heard and go study it ourselves?  Certainly, the followers of darkness will try to trick us, but even the well-intentioned can lead us astray unintentionally.  The only sure word is the word we get directly from God and the only way you’ll get that is to make time to be in The Word.
